Batik made easy: Liquid Wax on Tee

These are the basic items to draw a design in cold wax. Stretching a tee over a box or tray will be helpful and it can be used during the painting segment as well.

Step 1: Draw a design. Remember, parts where the liquid wax is, will remain 'empty' after colours are added. Allow it to dry overnight.

Step 2: Add Colours. Allow it to dry overnight.

Step 3: Soak the tee in water until the liquid wax has dissolved. Wash as normal with detergent.

Step 1: Use a liquid max marker to design images or patterns.
If students need a little guide to trace, use watercolour pencils to draw - easy to wash off as well.

Step 2:  Add colours (batik dyes). Avoid having dyes on the liquid wax as the colours.

Step 3: Brush on a layer of fixer on both sides of fabric. The colours will appear darker. This step is optional as it depends on the brand of dyes.

Step 4: Dry overnight
Step 5: Wash away under running hot water for painting with frames.
For fabric that can be removed from frame, soak in a pail of water.
Step 6: Dry overnight or under the sun.

The following two images show the same segment of a Batik Painting before and after Step 5.

The brown line is the liquid wax.

Printmaking in Linoleum: Craving Negative Spaces

round 2 of linoleum print was a bit more challenging because we were carving the negative spaces instead of the line
drawn. nonetheless, it was good to see students who had done it last term rememeber some of the key steps. And new members to the group picking it up quickly - peer modeling helps!!
Naturally some were confuse but that worked as it made them see the difference.

Again, we used watercolour crayon to achieve the base colour and the final step was in printmaking ink. with each creating a min of 3-4 prints.
